Map's Edge Media is an independent publishing imprint founded by fantasy fiction author and poet C.N. Mackey. Our goal is to publish works of fantasy fiction and science fiction that other publishers find too long or too different from what they consider mainstream.
We also keep an eye on the genre and the industry. Every week, Terra Incognita brings you genre news, honest information about independent publishing, and our recommendations for books, movies, music, and more.

START HERE: What Terra Incognita Is
Map's Edge Media is an independent publishing imprint. The newsletter, Terra Incognita, is its primary point of contact with readers and with anyone following the business of building an independent imprint from the ground up. It publishes three times a week. The three content streams serve two overlapping audiences: readers of epic fantasy who want something to hold onto between books, and independent publishers and authors who want honest, data-grounded information about how the industry actually functions. If you are both of those things, welcome.
Messages in a Bottle - Mondays
Dispatches from the wider world of epic fantasy. What readers are talking about, what is gaining traction in the genre, what is coming, and what is worth paying attention to. If it is happening in epic fantasy, this is where it washes ashore.
Rescue Party - Wednesdays
Independent publishing, without the promotional framing.
The Wednesday posts document what building an independent imprint actually looks like: print-on-demand cost structures, Kickstarter campaign mechanics, distribution options and their trade-offs, ISBN and retail channel realities, what hybrid publishing means in practice, royalty structures across platforms, editing and cover design budgets, and what the major publishing services do not include in their marketing materials.
The data is specific. Sources are named. The intent is to be useful to anyone making real decisions, not to inspire anyone or to make the process sound simpler than it is.
Points of Interest - Fridays
Books worth reading, adaptations worth watching, releases worth knowing about. Each recommendation comes with a specific reason. This is not a roundup of everything that came out. It is a short list of things that are genuinely worth your time, with a clear note on why.
