The best time to pick up a new fantasy series is often the month its second book arrives. The first has had time to find its readers, and the wait for what happens next is short. Two series reach that point in October.
The Outcast Mage and The Void Dragon by Annabel Campbell (Orbit; book two out October 13)
Campbell's debut is set in Amoria, a city of glass, and follows Naila, a mage who cannot use her own magic and is at risk of exile because of it. To survive, she has to trust unlikely allies, among them the most powerful wizard in the city and a priest sworn to kill mages. The sequel, The Void Dragon, continues her story as the strange power inside her starts to look like something that could break the world. The series, The Shattered Lands, is planned as a trilogy. On October 10, Campbell won Best Newcomer at the British Fantasy Awards.
Why we are highlighting it: debut fantasy is easy to skip in favor of a familiar name. An award confirming a new voice, arriving the same week as book two, is a good reason not to.
Songbird of the Sorrows and Daughter of the Tempest by Braidee Otto (Dial Press; book two out October 20)
Songbird of the Sorrows, billed as an epic romantic fantasy, was first published independently by Otto in June 2024. The Dial Press released it in US hardcover in February 2026, with Penguin publishing in Australia and New Zealand. The sequel, Daughter of the Tempest, follows Princess Aella and her best friend Nyssa, now the most wanted fugitives in the Empyrieos, as they fight to survive and find their way back to each other.
Why we are highlighting it: this is a book that found its first readers without a publisher behind it. For anyone who reads indie fantasy and has watched good books go unnoticed, it is worth seeing what one that broke through looks like.
Map's Edge Media watches for the books that earn their readers the long way, because that is the road most good fantasy travels.
