The Tabletop Test
If you’ve ever played Dungeons & Dragons (or just about any tabletop RPG), you know the thrill of rolling dice. You also know the agony of rolling a Nat-1.
In D&D, sometimes the odds are stacked against you. Maybe you’re climbing a cliff in the rain. Maybe you’re fighting blindfolded. The DM says: “Roll with disadvantage.” You roll two 20-sided dice, and you’re stuck with the lower one. Brutal.
But here’s the kicker: Even disadvantage rolls move the story forward.
The Psychology of “Failing Forward”
Games like D&D are little laboratories for resilience. Every botched roll is a chance to adapt. Instead of seeing failure as the end, the game reframes it as the next twist in the plot.
Psychologists call this cognitive flexibility, your brain’s ability to reframe setbacks as information, not proof of inadequacy. Gamers call it “well, that sucked…now what?”
When Life Feels Like Disadvantage
Let’s be real: Life hands us disadvantage all the time. Chronic illness. Burnout. A bad economy. Doors closed because of who we are or how we show up in the world. You do everything “right,” and still roll low.
What games remind us is this: even a bad roll still advances the story. You may not have climbed the cliff, but you’ve discovered a hidden cave. You may not have landed the job, but you’ve built interview skills and clarified what you actually want.
The Showgirl’s Spin on It
On stage, I’ve had music cut out, costumes break, props fail. That’s disadvantage. But burlesque taught me the same lesson as D&D: Audiences aren’t here for perfection. They’re here for how you recover. Sometimes the recovery becomes the most memorable part of the show!
Try This at Home (or at the Table)
Next time you “fail,” ask: What story does this create?
Reframe the roll: Was it wasted, or did it reveal something new?
Remember: Disadvantage isn’t punishment. It’s flavor.
The Last Word
Rolling with disadvantage doesn’t mean you’ve lost. It means you’re still in the game. And sometimes, the most legendary stories come from the lowest rolls.
So the next time life hands you Disadvantage, take a deep breath, roll the dice, and remember: Resilience isn’t about always winning, it’s about always playing on.
